Government Documents Area

Federal Depository

The Palmer Memorial Library of Texarkana College was designated a Federal depository in 1963 to serve the information needs of both the citizens of the 1st U.S. Congressional District of Texas and the academic communities of Texarkana College and Texas A&M University at Texarkana.

Subject Emphasis

The collection is made up of selected documents issued by agencies of the federal government that support the academic and vocational programs of study offered by the two schools. Main subject areas are business, education, health and criminal justice. Publications of interest to the general public are reflected in the areas of agriculture, census, law, tax and recreation. All documents are listed in the Online Catalog (EAGLIT). Most paper, CD-ROM and DVD items are circulated for two weeks with recheck privileges. Exceptions are law books, documents cataloged into the Reference Collection and selected tax and U.S. Census information.

The Government Documents Department maintains a close working relationship with the regional library at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, and Texas A&M University-Commerce. Inter-Library Loan service is used to borrow and/or loan requested documents to other universities and institutions.

Location

The majority of the depository collection is arranged by the Superintendent of Documents classification system and is located in the openly accessible Government Documents area on the second floor on the northwest side of the library. Microform reader/printers and computers with DVD capacity are nearby for ease of use. Selected series in law are reclassified into the Library of Congress system and housed in the Bound Books area downstairs. Some tax materials can be obtained at the Circulation Desk. Other documents such as publications containing statistical or directory information are located in the Reference Department. Indexed serials have been incorporated into the library’s serial holdings and are inter-filed in the Periodicals Department.
